A safe grill is essential for protecting your family and friends, preventing fire hazards, and ensuring that every meal is prepared in a clean and healthy environment. Here are a few safety tips to follow.
-
Clean your grill thoroughly after each use to remove grease and fat buildup, which can cause flare-ups and fires.
-
Check for damage and leaks (gas grills): Before using your gas grill for the first time each season, inspect the hose for cracks, brittleness, and leaks. You can test for leaks by applying a soapy water solution to the hose and looking for bubbles.
-
Check for rust (charcoal grills): Inspect metal charcoal grills for rust damage that could allow hot coals to fall through.
-
Proper propane handling: Store propane cylinders outdoors, at least 10 feet from building openings, and 20 feet away from air intake vents and ignition sources.
-
Store cylinders upright in a shaded area and avoid leaving them in vehicles or exposing them to high temperatures.
-
Check propane tanks around the collar for the expiration date of the propane tank if you are using a propane exchange. Tanks typically have a 12yr life unless recertified
